PETER TOON’S FUNDRAISING CYCLE CHALLENGE
CAPE WRATH TO BROADSTAIRS
THURSDAY 1ST MAY – THURSDAY 5 JUNE 2014
Peter Toon sets out on his epic journey from Cape Wrath to Broadstairs, this coming Thursday 1st May. You can follow his progress on Twitter @bikepilgrims and you can also donate by texting CWBS 99 ( stands for Cape Wrath to BroadStairs 99) and the amount to 70070
Peter Toon, a recently retired GP from Broad Street in Canterbury, has chosen to celebrate his 61st birthday year by challenging himself to cycle from one end of Britain to the other – a trip of over 850 miles – as a fundraiser for Catching Lives.
But when Peter sets out on Sunday 4 May he will not be taking the conventional Land’s End to John O’Groats route but the less popular ‘Other Diagonal’, from Cape Wrath (the most north-westerly extreme in mainland Scotland) to Broadstairs in Kent. For Peter, who began cycle touring in N.W. Scotland as a junior doctor – this trip will be a ‘return to his roots’
Leaving Cape Wrath, Peter will cycle an 11 mile untarmaced road to catch the Cape Wrath Ferry to cross the Kyle of Durness. For the next 8 days he will cycle through the magnificent Great Glen and the West Highlands then on to Kilmarnock, Airdrey and Teesdale. The route then passes through Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham, Kimbolton, down to Stevenage and into the Lee Valley passing through London. After crossing the Thames on the Gravesend Ferry, the final homeward stretch will be along the N. Kent Coast arriving at the North Foreland Lighthouse, Broadstairs by 4 June.
Peter’s interest in homelessness developed during the 1960’s when, as a student in London, he volunteered at Centrepoint (one of the first homeless shelters in the UK). Later, as a trainee GP, he was involved with a medical service for the homeless at St Botolphs Crypt, Aldgate.
Peter is intending to cycle an average of 30 miles per day, completing the 850 mile journey in approximately one month.
He aims to raise £10K on behalf of Catching Lives.
