Catching Lives kitchen volunteer Matt Gillett has landed a full-time role at The Goods Shed

Update: Three weeks into the job, Matt was offered the opportunity to train as a professional chef and has started his training. Well done Matt!

A Catching Lives volunteer is one step closer to his dream of training to be a chef after being offered a full-time role at The Goods Shed in Canterbury.

Matt Gillett, a former client of the charity, has been volunteering in the day centre kitchen serving up breakfast and lunch to clients for 11 months.

Matt, who also was a Project Worker during Catching Lives’ extended hours during Winter, said: “I felt it was time to get back into paid work.”

Ruth Akehurst, Volunteer Co-ordinator, and Miriam Ellis, Arts & Activities Co-ordinator at Catching Lives both helped Matt find a suitable role to apply for and prepare for the interview.

He undertook a trial shift as a kitchen porter and two days later was offered a full-time role. His responsibilities include keeping the preparation area clean, some food preparation and washing up

Matt added: “My hope for the future is to be trained up to become a chef as I do enjoy working in the kitchen.

“The team at the Goods Shed are really nice and have been very welcoming and I'm looking forward to my future working there.”

Ruth Akehurst, Volunteer Co-ordinator at Catching Lives, said: “We are so thrilled that Matt has been offered a full-time role that will help him move towards his dream of training as a chef.

“Matt has been a brilliant volunteer, who has great rapport with clients. We wish him all the best in this exciting new role.”

Matt is also doing a sponsored walk for Catching Lives. You can sponsor him here.
