Last year, we launched our 'Meet The Volunteers' feature in our monthly newsletter, celebrating the amazing people at the heart of Catching Lives. Now it's time to meet some of the brilliant facilitators who contribute to our Arts and Activities programmes. Artist Vicky Dyball, who works at Rock Paper Scissors, runs Vicky's Art Club workshops twice a month at Catching Lives.

Tell us about the activity you offer at Catching Lives
Hi, I’m Vicky from Rock Paper Scissors in Canterbury. Twice a month on Thursday afternoons, I have the pleasure of leading diverse and engaging art classes. Each session is unique, filled with painting, printmaking, and collage, offering something new every time.
How did you first hear about Catching Lives?
Our studio has been collaborating with Catching Lives on the Streets Ahead project for a couple of years. I was deeply honoured to be invited to conduct a Christmas workshop nearly two years ago, especially as I was relatively new to teaching. This opportunity was incredibly meaningful to me, knowing how vital the centre is to our community.
What are some joys you have experienced since starting with Catching Lives?
The true joy of these art classes comes from the wonderful people who attend. Each lesson is a blend of laughter and conversation, where the two hours seem to fly by. For those two hours, everyone can leave their worries at the door and focus on their well-being.
What would you say to someone thinking about getting involved at Catching Lives?
I wholeheartedly recommend volunteering. I've seen firsthand how Catching Lives provides essential resources to help people get back on their feet. Most importantly, it's the people who make all of this possible, their time, skills, knowledge, and willingness to listen and support are invaluable.
Outside of Catching Lives, how do you like to spend your time?
Outside of Catching Lives, I help run adult and children’s art classes at Rock Paper Scissors. While we specialise in various print processes, we’ve also fostered a creative community where everyone, from beginners to practicing artists, can come together. Growing up with dyslexia, I was often embarrassed to write, but art has given me a way to express myself and create something I’m proud of. Now, I love teaching others these skills and watching
What are your passions/ interests?
My passions have always been in the creative world, whether it’s creating art, teaching, or visiting exhibitions. I also play netball for two leagues and have recently become a fan of audiobooks. They keep my mind calm, and I enjoy listening to girly love stories, which would take me forever to read in print!
A Note From Catching Lives
Miriam Ellis, Activity Coordinator at Catching Lives, said: "In Vicky’s Art Class, participants explore new and interesting creative techniques every week. Her lessons are always filled with warmth and plenty of laughter."
